IT Outsourcing–A Greener Way to do Business
Many IT teams today are driven by the three P’s – Profit, People and Planet. While people and profits remain the priorities of decision makers from long ago, Green IT has emerged as the latest business paradigm of many well-known organisations in the last couple of years. Today, businesses understand that having a green focus will not cost more, but on the contrary will increase savings. Almost all major present day companies have a sustainability strategy in place and they realize that now is the time to go green.
Having said the above, there are many who still think that having a green focus will cost the business more money, which is a myth. If you are a profit driven organisation and do not yet have a sustainability strategy in place yet, then there is a huge probability that you may lose out on opportunities with potential partners and customers.
As an enterprise, you must realize that this is the time to go green, and you can do that by doing something as simple as outsourcing some IT functions. Yes, it is indeed possible to make your carbon footprint positive by outsourcing IT. For instance, if you have offices in multiple geographical locations and have your central IT team at your head office in location A. Now imagine an IT issue in multiple locations, say in locations B, C and D. Three of your in-house IT staff in location A will have to drive to the airport, take a flight to locations B, C and D, and then drive to the offices in respective locations – thus damaging the atmosphere with carbon dioxide emissions during the commute. If your company decides to outsource IT, you do not need to send your in-house IT team on a trip and can also reduce carbon emissions significantly. When you outsource IT, you contribute towards the well-being of the globe by reducing petrol/diesel, jet fuel and electricity consumption, thus creating a positive carbon footprint. It is needless to mention that you achieve all this at a fraction of the cost that you originally spent when you were managing IT with an internal team, thus enabling sustainable savings.
Many customers and partners prefer enterprises that have remarkable green and sustainability credentials. If your customers demand a new product, will you not invent it? Similarly, if your customers and partners are demanding a sustainability strategy, give it to them!
